Probably Stolen gameplay and mechanics

Last checked 2026-11-062 min read

Probably Stolen is a shopkeeping simulator with crafting, trading and risk management. This page summarises systems the developer has described. It does not list item prices, recipes or customer details, because the sources checked do not publish them in a form we can verify.

The daily loop

You manage a shop counter and decide how to handle each customer: approve, refuse, report or look away. The features list also mentions balancing supply and demand by attracting the right customers, haggling for deals, and managing and expanding your inventory. Rent keeps rising, and confiscated stock or a bad deal can make the next payment hard.

Goods and risk

Steam describes each product line as carrying its own risk. Cigarette packs need visual inspection before resale, water must be tested and filtered, weapons need permits and modifications, valuable chemicals rely on closely guarded recipes, and rare items need appraisal to avoid overpaying. You can cut quality, relabel counterfeits as genuine, or fence stolen goods if you think Security will not catch you. Suppliers can overstate value and contraband can have problems you only notice later.

Inspections and hiding goods

The store page says you can hide stolen goods and contraband from the authorities or bribe your way out if you are caught. Patch notes mention Smuggler Bays, a display case and Security inspections, which confirms these are part of the game.

Production and expansion

You can manage machines and production chains to craft valuable artifacts, unlock advanced licenses for the underground market, and run additional jobs such as water merchant, hydroponic farmer and organ dealer, according to the Steam feature list. The developer also says Vending Machines in 1.0 keep selling goods overnight after you close.

Starting scenarios

  • Apprentice: a generalist start, described as best for beginners.
  • Water Merchant: test, purify and relabel water.
  • Fence: stolen goods.
  • Rock Bottom: start with nothing, at maximum difficulty.
  • Hydroponic Farmer: grow crops in limited space.
  • Gunsmith: weapons and mods, starting with a Class 1 weapon permit.
  • Chemist: chemical recipes and lab equipment.
  • Rat Wrangler: the developer asks whether you can grow a healthy 2x3 rat.
  • Aquafarmer: breed fish, starting with tilapia.

Difficulty and mods

After choosing a starting scenario you can pick one of four difficulty options. The patch notes name Cozy, Normal, Hard and Challenge. A Steam Workshop, a modding API and mod localization support were added in 1.0. A mode called Sentinel Collapse Disorder is mentioned by the developer, who advises against it on a first run; its rules are not described in the sources checked.

Not yet released

The developer lists the Junker, Organ Trader and Street Food Vendor starting scenarios, Expeditions, new appraisal items and a main storyline expansion as post-launch plans. These are plans, not released features, and release dates are not given in the sources checked.
