Horses of Hoofprint Bay gameplay and mechanics

This page summarises systems the developer has described on Steam and in announcements. Exact stat values, prices and recipes are not published in the sources we checked, so they are not listed. Some features were described in pre-release dev updates and may have been rebalanced before launch.

Horse care

You groom and comb horses, use a brush and hoofpick to avoid saddle sores and abscesses, and treat scrapes and injuries when they happen. Screenshots show a care menu with feed, groom, edit tack, medical and move options.

Training and confidence

You complete training exercises to build a horse's strength and confidence so it can qualify for competitions. The August dev update says confidence was reworked: a warning icon now appears before an unprompted gait change, and a Desensitization training course has you approach a scary object while watching the horse, praising curiosity and giving it space when it is worried. Confidence takes longer to max out, but the effects of low confidence are easier to reduce.

Competitions and trails

Competitions named by the developer are Caprilli tests, show jumping and, added in 2026, cross country. Cross country can offer a shorter route with harder obstacles or a longer one with easier jumps. Horses need strength and endurance for it. Trail rides in forest, beach and mountain settings provide a change of pace. Prestige, introduced in the August update, rises with building upgrades, competition wins, caring for boarders and high-quality horses. It can fall if you fail competitions, compete on dirty horses or without suitable clothing, or when a horse becomes seriously ill. It affects the horses the breeder offers, tack in the shop and which trail rides you unlock.

Breeding

Foals inherit a mix of their parents' coloring, white patterns and personality traits. Pairings can aim for looks or stats. A high-tech breeding station lab, unlocked by advanced building stages, previews possible foals and lets you sell more stud services. Leopard patterns similar to Appaloosa and Knabstrupper horses were added in 2026.

Management and upgrades

You save money to upgrade buildings, which makes room for more horses and meets their needs, and you hire staff to keep up with care and training. Advanced building stages unlock new training courses and staff applications. Horse personality traits make some horses get dirty faster, be more injury-prone or change gait on their own even at full confidence.

Customization and mods

A built-in color picker edits your character and tack. The developer says you can also edit game files, textures and text files to change colors, horses and characters. The developer states the game uses no generative AI.

Not announced

The developer said it wants to release a finished game rather than promise major updates after launch, so there is no content roadmap in the sources checked.
